As I mentioned in my last post, Rika and I have been taking an Italian class. Now that we've finally covered some of the past tense, we can actually talk about more than just what we're doing right now. That is, if we knew any verbs.
As part of the class, we have to spend 24 hours in the "Language Center" on campus. If you don't go, you fail. Luckily, it's open from 9:30 to 6:30 Monday to Thursday. As this doesn't work for anyone with a job, we've negotiated a nice compromise: we prove we've studied, and they give us credit for the time. What's great is they've included things like "going to the Italian Film Festival" as studying.
Rika and I studied Italian tonight.
We watched a brilliant film titled, Rosso Come il Cielo (Red Like the Sky). It's based on the true story of a boy named Mirco Mencacci who is currently one of Italy's most accomplished sound editors working in movies today.
At the age of 10 (in 1970) Mirco was blinded and sent to a school for the blind. He loves the movies and discovers his passion for telling stories with sound. Snubbed from the end-of-the-year school performance, Mirco uses the school tape recorder and, with the help of his classmates and Francesca, the daughter of the caretaker, they set out to tell their own story.
I won't go into more detail about the movie itself, except to say that it is amazing, beautiful, inspiring, and did I say amazing? Easily one of the best movies I've seen this year, and I don't think I can recommend it highly enough. You need to see this film. Devete vedere cuesto cinema. (You need to see this film.)
